A sonically throbbing fierce panda one sheet The Act: JEKYLL The Release: ‘MARIONETTE’ The Format: DIGISINGLE The Label: fierce panda The Release Date: JULY 12TH 2019 The Digital Link: orcd.co/jekyll_marionette The Truth: JEKYLL are four leftfield dreamers from Blackpool, England. They consist of Joel Foster (vocals / guitar), Lewis Armistead (bass), Liam Singleton (drums) and Mike Spence (guitar). The throbbing curveball that is ‘Marionette’ is their speedily-released new single on fierce panda, following on from the colossal ‘Jekyll’ EP in 2018 and the recent dazzling ‘Echoes’ single. It’s a fervently epic arena-sized sound that they make too: fresh from recording a Maida Vale session for Radio One’s Huw Stephens, which garnered extra plays from Dan P Carter and Jack Saunders, and backed by the muscular support of BBC Introducing Lancashire and beyond ‘Marionette’ is propelled onwards by swooping vocals and sweeping melodies, all underpinned by a throbbing sense of genteel menace and all wrapped up in three minutes and 21 seconds. Or, in the words of singer Joel: “Marionette is one of our oldest songs, but it’s taken a long time for it to be fully realised. It first existed only as a verse chord progression, written by Liam (drummer), that I was so impressed with I chose to write a song around. It’s existed in many incarnations and, for a long time, it wasn’t quite certain what direction the song needed to go in; but, when some fortuitous last-minute studio time was offered to us, we decided it was time to really nail ‘Marionette’. “With regards to the meaning behind ‘Marionette’, it might be preferential not to disclose too much and let the audience interpret the song in their own way.” Joel might have a point as ‘Marionette’ ends with the lines “Sometimes I’m overwhelmed with shame / But never enough to change my ways / Yet the only thing I ever seem to do is rob angels of their wings, their beauty and their virtue.” Come interpret Jekyll’s intense idiosyncrasies at these summertime blasts here:
