An anthemically viral fierce panda one sheet The Act: MEMES The Tune: ‘CHEER UP’ The Format: DIGITAL SINGLE The Release Date: MAY 22ND 2020 The Label: fierce panda records The Digital Link: https://orcd.co/memes_cheerup The Truth: “MEMES is a duo from Glasgow comprised of ME and ME, because we are selfish genes. Since forming in 2019 - with a difficult-to-Google name – several gigs in Glasgow and London, a few single releases, favourable comments on the music, unfavourable comments on the ‘dancing’ and a BBC live session for Steve Lamacq have led us here.” So say MEMES, the dynamic Scottish combo who’ve been causing frantic poet-punk ructions with their two man / one laptop sonic assaults and who now have may well written the ultimate alternative Covid-19 anthem in the form of thunderously fine new single ‘Cheer Up’. Over a muscular motorik groove they encourage various global players such as Donald, Hillary and Boris to “cheer up” (yes, an emergency substitute version was recorded lest Bojo actually failed to make it out of the ICU), but don’t take our word for it, hear what MEMES have to say here: “‘Cheer Up’ is about cancelled gigs, environmental catastrophe and the importance of staying in to watch TV. It's about heads of states and states of hands. It's about lifting the gloom in an atmosphere of doom. It's about fast food and slow internet. Streaming MP3s at 2MTRs distance. Stay home. Protect the NHS. Cheer Up.” Several lifetimes ago, ie in late 2019, MEMES were busy releasing a single on fierce panda called ‘J.O.B.S.’ and playing some of the sweariest live shows known to alt.rock-kind with the likes of Mice On Mars and Egyptian Blue and Toy and Talk Show and Folly Group and Skint & Demoralised. They also released a lovely vinyl 7” on Six Tonnes De Chair Records featuring the tub-thumping tunes ‘Blah Blah Blah’, ‘Funny Man’ and ‘Happy Shopper’. MEMES started 2020 with an appearance at The Social for Pandamonium ’20, alongside shows by label mates Scrounge, China Bears and Italia ’90, and squeezed in a mid-March hometown support with The Dunts right before the gigging world ended. One fine day it will start again, perhaps in time for these scheduled and rescheduled shows here:
