Ever-effervescent North London alt.gothic indie tykes Desperate Journalist continue their New Year clampdown with a new single to lead us ever closer to the release of their second album on March 24th and a European tour which includes their headline show at The Scala on April 6th.
That new single is called ‘Be Kind’ and it is notable for a good few reasons: firstly it is the third track to be taken from the imminent ‘Grow Up’ opus; secondly it arguably represents their most (bitter)sweet creative moment so far thanks to a lush combination of Jo Bevan’s yearning vocals and Rob Hardy’s swoonsome guitar peaking with a frankly fabulous melodic surge around 2.14 in; thirdly – and here comes the spoiler alert – there’s an ace false ending bang on the three minute mark. Predictably this is the only thing remotely fake about Desperate Journalist one of the most potent important DIY bands lurking on the underground scene right now. The ‘Grow Up’ campaign started with a Kamio appearance and the release of lead-off track ‘Hollow’ last November. Then came the release of second single ‘Resolution’ on January 1st which was appointed as a Lamacq Livener pop-charmed its way onto the 6 Music playlist and blew punk rock kisses at a smitten blogosphere. Next up hot on the heels of the ‘Be Kind’ single the feisty quartet will release their sophomore album ‘Grow Up’ ostensibly eleven tracks of rocketing leftfield delights propelled forth with thundering rhythms thunderously spectacular guitar and thunderstruck vocals which sees Desperate Journalist building on the sublimely tetchy mood swings of their 2014 self-titled debut and the tense interim ‘Good Luck’ EP by adding a fresh sonic sheen to their old school indie stroppings. ‘Grow Up’ is available to pre-order on CD via Panda website right now while below you can also find details of an exclusive super-cheap CD / gig ticket bundle. Hold on tight…
