The Truth: THE KABEEDIES still live in Norwich and consist of Rory (microphone / bass), Fab (drummings), Katie (microphone) and Evan (microphone / guitar). They persist in describing themselves as “a suspicious gathering of some boys and a girl” and continue to fling out influences which run the gamut from Blondie to Bombay Bicycle Club via Buddy Holly, Black Flag and Chuck Berry. And those are just the ‘B’s. It’s been said before and we’ll say it again - with their childhood roots in both Norfolk and Suffolk The Kabeedies are the biggest thing to come out of East Anglia since Stephen Fry’s mighty brain.
** ‘Bones’ and ‘Underfloor Lover’ comprise The Kabeedies’ new double AA-side single. Both songs are from ‘Soap’, their second album which was released on fierce panda in January. ‘Soap’ itself is the follow-up to the presciently-named ‘Rumpus’ album of 2009 which defined the insanely youthful Kabeedies as indie funkids with a fizzbanging collage of yelps and twangs and jumpy artrocking angles which came across like Claire Grogan fronting The Futureheads.
** That was then. And this, as they say, is now. “We’re not writing songs as fifteen year olds anymore,” says Rory. True enough, ‘Soap’ is the relative calm after the bubblegum storm of ‘Rumpus’, and that calm is no more apparent than in this ‘Bones’ / ‘Underfloor Lover’ singular face off. ‘Bones’ shows touches of Paul Simon’s more sombre moods with its weepy strings and mournful refrain of “He’s just another face in the crowd”. And then they get really introspective and weird in ‘Underfloor Lover’…
** When THE KABEEDIES make it back out off their current European tour they will be being mysteriously inscrutable at these shows here.
